The New American is Living Voices’ journey into immigration in 1910. It tells the story of a young Irish girl whose economic outlook for herself and her family forces them to make some hard choices in order to survive. Bridget, like young people from countries around the world, takes that journey toward the only hope left for so many people, America. She vividly recounts her experiences, from her journey across the Atlantic, to her passage through Ellis Island and into the bustling city of New York, as she struggles to make a go of it in America. The New American is a play that uses a live actor who interacts with videotape containing the voices of other people in Bridget’s life as well as the sounds, music, and images of the time.
